We Gotta Buy This Bike
Honey....I wanna buy a bike?
"Why?".... she says (silly question). So we can have some fun....call it
....doing something together.
My 1st purchase? A beat up 1982
Honda Magna 750. With a little elbow grease and TLC I get it up and
running. During this process....we see "The Val" sitting at our local
Honda dealership. We look at it each time we are there....eventually
sitting on it once....ya know....just to see. We ride the 750 1
season....we have fun....wife says....we need a bigger bike.
(I do like how this woman thinks)
Let's get a Wing she says...and the search begins. None to be had locally, but plenty abroad....road trip.
Just days before we are to leave I say...."what about that big black bike at the dealership?".... "It's not a Wing" is her reply...."yeah, I know, but let's check it out".
With a big grin on the dealer's face
he says....take it for a ride....try it out. I tell him we won't be long....he
laughs.
(Perhaps he knows something we don't?)
We hop on and fire it up...wow ! Outside I'm looking calm..big smile....inside I'm a bundle of nerves.
Grinning , the salesman asks...."What you waiting for"?
My reply was simple and to the point...."Just trying to build up the nerve to let out the clutch". He laughed...the wife shook her head....I gritted my teeth....my knuckles no doubt getting whiter by the second.
We slowly cruise through town, heading
for the highway, trying to get the feel for the bike. Hitting the
highway we accelerate to highway speed....WHAT A RIDE! F
lying down the highway I can barely make out what the wife
is yelling....perhaps she's not happy? I pull over to the shoulder and
ask her what she was saying. The visor gets flipped up....and with a big
smile on her face she screams....
"WE GOTTA BUY THIS BIKE"!!!!
(Did I mention I like how this woman thinks?)
The end of the story is simple....bought the bike that day, no dickering about....asked the price and wrote the check.
The wife warmly calls the bike "The
Val", "our baby", or....her big mobile easy chair.
We added a trailer hitch and pull a small trailer behind.
We have agreed, with out a shred of
doubt, we will never own another bike. That was in 2003, the bike is a
2000 Interstate, the dealers father road it for a year, but sold it to us as a
new bike with full warranty, even through in a couple of Honda
t-shirts....the wife is on her second t-shirt, wore out the other one. (I
always suspected she was a closet biker babe.) The heads turn when we
ride by and we love every minute of it....yeah....that's right....it's a
dragon....
"Go tell your momma what the big boys ride".
Safe riding fellow Valkyrians.
